Interboro Bucs 2011 Preview

GLENOLDEN — There will be no taking things for granted at the South Avenue Athletic Complex this year.

Last fall, Interboro’s plans to earn a 13th consecutive Del Val League championship weren’t realized. This year’s Bucs realize they have work to do if they want to reclaim their accustomed spot at the top of the Del Val standings.

“We’re capable of beating everyone on our schedule,” Steve Lennox, who begins his 19th season as Interboro’s coach, said. “I expect to win, and we always have high expectations. But we have to play disciplined football, because everyone we play is capable of beating us if we don’t.”

Senior quarterback Josh Breen became a starter when 2010 QB Adam Smith was hurt last year and contributed to the Bucs’ Class AAA district playoff win over an Upper Moreland team that had beaten Interboro earlier in the season.

“He’s got a great attitude and has worked very hard,” Lennox said of the 6-1, 170-pounder.

Breen, who also is a baseball pitcher, began playing football with the Prospect Park Termites when he was a third grader.

“(Receiver) Shawn Frampton and I have played together for a long time,” Breen said.

Lee, lineman Sean Philips and Dave Kennedy, a running back, linebacker and long snapper, are Interboro’s captains.

“This year, when we open the season there will be a lot of nerves,” Breen said. “And the seniors will know that this is the last time we’ll run out there on opening night. Our biggest goal before we start is to win that first game (against Springfield). We want to win the Del Val League, and we want to go back to the playoffs.”

When Breen wasn’t teaming up with Frampton through the air, he hoped to be handing off to Kennedy, a senior captain who has been a backfield regular since his sophomore season. Kennedy’s contributions this year may be limited to a lot of cheering from the sideline and occasional trips on the field to snap the ball to the punter or place-kick holder.

“I’ve had two operations on my (right) shoulder,” said Kennedy, whose father, Wayne Kennedy, and uncle, Brandt Kennedy, were All-Delco players at Sharon Hill High. “I got hurt playing lacrosse last spring.

“I know this is my last season, and I really want to play. When you’re a captain, you represent everyone on the team. You set the example and help everyone keep going. This season, we’ve got a lot to do. All of us want the Del Val (title) back.”

The Bucs have some size up front, led by senior captain Philips (225) and tight end/defensive end Rashun Fentress (205), who are returning starters. Chris Simmons (235), Bob McLaughlin (205) and Matt Gould (265) add more bulk up front.

“We have a tradition of working hard here,” Philips said. “We want this team to live up to those expectations. We’ve had a good summer lifting. Now it’s up to the seniors to keep everyone else working hard.”

Juniors Ty McLaughlin and Tom Takacs will see time in the backfield and John Bellano (200) and Dan Hopson (180) are tight ends and Bellano is a punter.

Mike Christaldi will be counted on as the place-kicker.

Lennox also figures to get help from transfers Austin Quran, a running back, and Angelo (320) and Eric (210) Owens.
